Our mate Jarryd Roughead knows this better than most. After a melanoma was removed from his lip when he was 29, the real battle began a year later when cancer returned and had spread to his lungs.

At the time, Roughy was at the peak of his footy career, had recently married his beautiful wife, Sarah, and was midway through a home renovation. The diagnosis of secondary cancers shook their world.

Fortunately, Roughy had access to top medical care and the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial for a new drug.

Although the treatment was gruelling and had many side effects, it was ultimately successful, and Roughy was able to make a full recovery. Sadly, as we know, not everyone is as lucky.

Roughy never wanted to be the poster boy for skin cancer prevention, but his story serves as a reminder of how important it is to prioritise sun protection and regular skin checks.
